Newbie's Guide to Chatrooms & Board Posting

by Bestat, Exclusive Content

I remember when I first starting frequenting Adult Webmaster boards and some of the terminology and shorthand posters used, confused the heck out of me! It also took me many months of "lurking" (reading the boards but not posting) to learn some of the proper and improper ways to post. When you are new to posting or attending chat rooms the experience can be very intimidating, say the wrong thing and your first impression can follow you forever. So I thought I would put together a small guide to at least take some of the mystery and uneasiness out of the experience for those of you who have yet to take the plunge.

  • Symbols, also known as webmaster shorthand

When you are in front of your keyboard 8 to 20 hours a day, you learn very quickly to get your point across with as few keystrokes as possible. Here are a few of the more common symbols used and their meanings. Be aware there are far too many to list here, and new ones are being created all the time, so if you don't understand one in a chat, be sure to ask!

    AFK - Away From Keyboard
AISI - As I See It
ASAP - As Soon As Possible
    B4N - Bye For Now
    BAK - Back At Keyboard
BBFN - Bye Bye For Now
BBIAB - Be Back In A Bit
BBIAF - Be Back In A Few (minutes)
    BBL - Be Back Later
    BEG - Big Evil Grin
    BFN - Bye for Now
    BTW - By the Way
    FYI - For Your Information
GMTA - Great Minds Think Alike
    IC - I See
IMHO - In My Humble Opinion
    J/K - Just Kidding
KISS - Keep It Simple, Stupid
    L8R - Later
LMAO - Laughing My Ass Off
LMHO - Laughing My Head Off
    LOL - Laughing Out Loud
LTNS - Long Time No See
LTNT - Long Time, No Type
    PPL - People
ROFL - Rolling On Floor Laughing
ROFLMAO - Rolling On Floor Laughing My Ass Off
TTFN - Ta Ta For Now
TTYL - Talk To You Later
    WB - Welcome Back
    WTF - What The F***?
    WTG - Way To Go!
    YW - You're Welcome!

As I stated, this is just a partial list, but it should come in handy the first few times you are in a chat room. You will be surprised how quickly you will get a handle on the symbols as well as the flow of the chat. Remember these chat rooms are made for us to go in and swap ideas, discuss things, and learn more about the business and the people in it. So there is no reason to be shy or hesitant, get out there and Network!

  • Web Master Boards

Ok, some of the boards out there can be very challenging and you should never judge all boards by the others. There are almost as many web master boards out there as there are webmasters so be sure to read many of them on a regular basis to get a feel for what those particular boards are like. Some boards are more geared towards the seasoned webmaster and tend to be more an exchange of opinions than a place to have questions answered. There are other boards dedicated to the new webmaster, where questions are not only welcome they are encouraged! So you should visit as many as you can as often as you can so you can tell which boards are right for you. It is also a great way to get to know who is who in the business and what area of the business they are in. This way if you have a specific question about TGP's for example, you will have a better idea who to address the question to.

Once you have chosen which boards you wish to start posting on (and you should chose more than one!). Your first post should be an introduction of yourself and what you do, or wish to do in the business. Be careful here, you do not want your post coming over as Spam! Go with something simple, like; "Hi, my name is Bart and this is my first post here, though I have been reading the board for sometime. I like the community here, and hope to be a part of it, and learn more about (insert your interest here) from all of you." This lets the other posters know your name, what you are interested in and gives them the opportunity to post back to you with hello's, welcomes and perhaps some questions. This gives you the perfect opportunity for your next post! Thanking them for the welcome, answering their questions, etc. After that, it is just a matter of asking questions, answering other the questions of others when you can, and getting in on the general discussions. If you do have something you wish to promote, or a URL you want to get out for people to see, then use the taglines offered on most boards. This is an acceptable form of spam as it were and you can be creative with these taglines, promoting specials, sponsors etc. Until you have become established in a community and have a very good idea of what is tolerated, keep your posts simple and free of self promotion.

On many boards you will witness some webmasters getting into arguments or "piss" matches on the boards. Some of these are staged for the benefit of the pissers to get notice and some are legitimate arguments about subjects they disagree on. If and when you feel strongly enough about something to take issue with it on the boards, it should be a debate of issues and not a personal attack. Be wary of what you say to whom, as the webmaster could very well be in a position of importance the next time you run across him or her! It is perfectly fine to debate your side of an issue on the boards, but if you have a complaint or disagreement with someone particular or a sponsor, the discussion should NOT be on the boards but via email, or even better telephone! You will not do yourself any favors going to the board about a dispute, there are always other, more beneficial avenues you can take. If you cannot resolve a problem with a person or sponsor yourself, email someone you know and trust who may be in a position to help or at least advise you. If you take such a problem to the boards, you will always look like the "bad guy" for taking it public.
The webmaster boards and chat rooms are a fantastic source of information, networking, and relaxation. If something is going on in the industry, the boards are the place you will normally hear it first! You can utilize the boards to your benefit for knowledge, advertising, marketing and friendship. But if you do not post or participate, we are not going to know you are there!

See you on the boards!!
